our work small medium large competition + close lostock 1 2 3 4 5 6 this 1970’s house is in leafy suburbs north of manchester. the ground floor accommodation has been reordered and extended to create a music room, large kitchen, dining area and study. full height sliding glazed screens encourage the flow from the house through to the terrace and the garden, whilst maximising views across open fields to the south. the extension is clad in brickwork, lead and stone, responding to the original house, but detailed in a contemporary manner. the completed project was shortlisted (one of only six) for a prestigious award hosted by the royal institute of british architects. close healey 1 2 3 4 5 6 the proposed scheme remodels and extends an existing 1980s ‘estate’ house. the rear of the existing house has been partially removed creating a direct link between house and garden. large sliding doors reinforce this connection. the new accommodation provides a kitchen / entertainment area with cutting edge installations. the extension is finished in brickwork with stone detailing. the roof is dressed in lead. close wilpshire 1 2 3 the proposals remodelled and extended an existing detached house. the extension worked within the permitted development constraints for the property ensuring that planning permission was not required. the extension provided a large ‘family’ room incorporating the kitchen, dining and sitting accommodation. extensive glazing and french doors reinforced the connection with the garden. the central glazed lantern features a single sheet of glass, 3.5 x 1.2m wide. close tockholes 1 2 3 the conversion of this redundant, single storey barn will provide ancillary accommodation for the neighbouring property. the proposed building will house an entertainment / guest suite, gymnasium plus storage for outdoor sports equipment. windows and large sliding doors maximise views across open fields and establish an immediate connection through to the gardens. materials follow the existing building using stone, oak and slate. the gardens will also be reconsidered to offer greater privacy, whilst seamlessly flowing into the neighbouring landscape. close oldfield 1 2 3 4 this house in the yorkshire dales has stunning views and a southerly aspect from the garden within the house you are almost completely unaware of this. the house also has very low ceilings, which further reinforces the sense of enclosure. by exploiting the changes in levels, the extension seeks to create a double height lounge/music room that allows the owners to appreciate the changing weather and landscape from within the house. the extension also has an extra bathroom and clarifies the entrance arrangements for the house, by making it very clear where the front door is and allowing guests to enter the house without first passing through a utility room. close blackburn 1 2 the existing house is a substantial grade 2 listed property with extensive grounds on the edge of blackburn. the house has renovated and extended within the last ten years. the proposed extension provides additional leisure facilities complementing the existing house, including a pool, steam room/sauna and fitness area. the proposed wing is dug into the existing hillside, reducing its apparent size and possible impact on the neighbouring house. the composition and materials are unashamedly ‘modern’ with stone faced fin walls, frameless glass and a grass covered roof. close rochdale 1 2 this sensitive upgrading and extension of an existing 1930s ‘arts and craft’ type house is one of the smallest projects undertaken by stanton andrews. the kitchen/dining area has been fully remodelled in a contemporary manner whilst respecting the original building. tall windows and doors create a direct link, both visually and physically, from the dining area through to the garden. the extension is finished in white render, slate and hardwood (from an approved sustainable source). works were completed in autumn 2009. at completion our client said :- “stanton andrews’ ideas were superb. they managed the whole project very efficiently, keeping a tight but friendly relationship with the building firm. at every stage we felt the service provided was exemplary and would have no hesitation in recommending stanton andrews to anyone contemplating a similar exercise”. close oasis 1 2 this project is for a relatively new building type – the smoking shelter – created by the 2006 health act, which came into force on 01 july 2007. this states that smoking is forbidden within structures that were substantially enclosed. to allow smoking a smoking shelter has to be less than 'substantially enclosed'. this means that more than 50% of its sides must be permanently open. in most instances planning consent is not required, however this shelter is located within a conservation area and consent was required. as the openness is required to ensure good air movement it seemed appropriate to look at the design of sun shelters that provide cooling by allowing the air to move through the building structure. this shelter is for a late-night smoothie bar (alcohol free), which caters for the local clientele by providing hookahs with multi-hoses. close burnley 1 the proposals allow for the remodelling and extension of a grade 2star listed building. the extension is hunkered down into the landscape within the garden of the original house, providing accommodation supplementing the existing property. a frameless glass link connects the two parts, whilst allowing old and new to be clearly read as such. the roof of the extension is covered in grass, minimising its impact and integrating it into the landscape. exposed areas of wall are treated in dressed stone. close thornley with wheatley 1 the proposals provide much needed additional accommodation to complement the adjacent house within an area of outstanding natural beauty. the proposals are on the site of a former double garage, has significant level changes, and is extremely restricted. the proposed accommodation is split over three floors. the upper level is accessed directly from the existing garden, and provides a study/garden room with large windows offering views across the valley. the middle floor has a double garage plus ‘plant’ servicing the house. the lower floor has an entertainment room sunk into the hillside. the proposed section ensures natural light cuts through to this level. close chorley 1 2 3 4 the original barn had been converted at the start of the century. our brief was to transform the barn into a ‘state of the art’ modernist property. the proposals strip and remodel the property providing accommodation with a much more contemporary feel and a stronger link to the garden. a new porch has been provided that links into a three storey hall with twin flight oak cantilever staircase. the new family room features an 8m wide opening with sliding doors with a new floating roof with clerestorey glazing around three sides. close middleton 1 2 3 4 this georgian house was built at the start of the nineteenth century. the house has suffered over recent years, with many poorly considered and executed features. the modification of the existing house is split into two phases. phase one - renovating the original house, reinstating many of the original features, whilst providing a touch of modern luxury. phase two - extending the house, creating an orangery, garage, office, pool, fitness suite and landscaping. materials and composition are traditional, chosen to sympathise with the original house, with the use of handmade brick, stone, slate and lead. close langho 1 2 3 4 5 the house was designed to replace an existing dwelling – in the green belt - on the edge of a village within the ribble valley. the siting and composition takes into consideration steep falls across the site and a number of mature trees. the arrangement of ‘blocks’ helps to create a hierarchy of accommodation, from entrance court through to priv
